"During my early 20's I had the privilege of working with Angela Martin.  Now, approaching 30, I have continued that relationship and see her life to be an example of strength, kindness, stability and progress. She is often a person I consult when I am in a time of need because she has proven herself to consistently bring clarity and confidence to my life's direction. Her bold focus and talent for success has been an enormous resource in a world where good friends and advice are difficult to find."

This I Believe

Posted by Angela on December 22, 2008

My maternal grandmother died one year ago at the age of 94. She was the quintessential Southern preacher’s wife and retired schoolteacher—outgoing, cheerful, devout, fabulous cook, comfortable in telling people what to do, and who we called “the informer.” She knew all the goings on in not only our family, but her church and small community in North Carolina. And likewise everyone knew and loved Mrs. Mullis. We were anticipating her final days, but when we all flew in from around the country, it was bittersweet to celebrate her life as we gathered at her beloved Grove Presbyterian Church. My mom asked me to speak and as I stood at the pulpit, where my grandpa used to preach, looking at the pews full of people honoring my grandma, I thought of this essay read on the NPR show “This I Believe” in August 2005. It’s one of my best memories of my commute when I lived in Baltimore. I cannot say it any better.

“Most days, my real battle is doing good versus doing nothing.”
